A Walk-to-Remember

A special #ActiveAnglers activity.

Once every quarter, our team takes on a new challenge - usually something outside our comfort zone - to learn a new skill beyond recruitment and have some fun.

The previous quarter, we scaled new heights with rock-climbing and bouldering (with a coach to show us the ropes - literally!). Link for context:

As I was about to book Paddle for us, I received an email from a friend,
Martin Henry the CEO of IVS and Tamar. One of their beloved employees, Captain Sun - tragically lost his life in a car accident last year, and Martin was arranging a #WalkToRemember.

After a democratic discussion and debate about how long 10km would take us to walk - the Angle team unanimously agreed to put Paddle on hold and lace up for the
#10kmWalk in honour of Captain Sun.

Now, I thought this would be a ‘walk in the park’ - and technically, it was - but when you factor in 30°C heat and 85% humidity, let’s just say it became a bit of an endurance test!

We made it though, and the "before" and "after" photos speak volumes. I think I (Jason) came out the least disheveled, but I’ll leave that for the comments to decide!

The proceeds are going to three causes:

- Captain Sun’s family
-
Dementia Singapore, a cause dear to me as my late dad had dementia.
-
Care Corner Singapore Ltd, supporting youth engagement and counselling.

Celebrating Singapore's 59th
National Day with Aphasia SG (Chit Chat Cafe)

We had a wonderful morning volunteering at the Chit Chat Cafe, where we learned a lot about
aphasia by speaking with individuals affected by the condition.

It's an incredible platform for people with aphasia to connect and socialise with other people who are at various stages of their recovery journey and to feel the love and care at the 100 percent volunteer-led event, organised and founded by a good friend,
Evelyn Khoo.

Prior to this volunteering experience, we knew very little about aphasia, so let's start with a brief explanation. Aphasia is a language disorder caused by damage to the brain areas that control language expression and comprehension, impacting communication.

Everyone we interacted with had experienced a stroke and had varying levels of speech ability. Hearing their stories was fascinating and served as a poignant reminder of life's fragility - one moment you're fine, and the next, your entire world can change.

One gentleman, a business owner, shared a story that resonated. He suffered a stroke three years ago, luckily, at the time he was in the process of selling his business and his partners helped facilitate the sale, ensuring a smooth transition. This allowed him to focus on his recovery, which included spending almost a year in hospital.

Jason Nangle, Founder & Managing Director of Angle Recruitment  commented:

"As an expatriate who has lived in Singapore for more than a decade, it was a real pleasure to converse, sing, play games and celebrate National Day with everyone. Singing National Day songs is an unusual concept for me, but with half of my family being Singaporean, I've become accustomed to it!"

Project Chulia Street

Project Chulia Street was formed in 2016 as a ground up initiative that serves as a platform to bring together entities and individuals for projects that enhance health and happiness for migrant workers in Singapore and enhance their social and economic mobility at partnering workers' accommodations.

For the National Day fiesta, in celebration of Singapore's 58th birthday, volunteers from Raleigh Singapore, Temasek Trust and members of the public, came together to set up booths to give out free vegetables, biscuits and Indian cuisine to migrant workers to thank them for their hard work and contributions to Singapore. They were also entertained by roving magicians and live musicians who belted familiar songs from their countries.

Jason Nangle, Founder & Managing Director of Angle Recruitment volunteered at Project Chulia Street’s fiesta held on 5 August 2023. He was part of the Raleigh Singapore team of volunteers and assisted with the logistical set-up and giving out potatoes to the migrant brothers at their work dormitory in Singapore. He commented:

"Participating in Project Chulia Street’s National Day fiesta was a profoundly rewarding experience. It was heartwarming to see the smiles on the faces of our migrant brothers as we distributed food and shared in the festivities. Their contributions to Singapore are immense, and it was a privilege to give back and express our gratitude. The sense of community and mutual appreciation was palpable, and I am proud to have been a part of such a meaningful initiative."
